How much can you claim? What are the rules?
Are you experiencing baggage delay? Losing your baggage can be a stressful situation. Picture this – you’re waiting for your bag to arrive at the airport’s baggage carousel, but it doesn’t show up. After all the other bags are taken, you realize yours is missing. It’s possible that it may have been loaded onto the wrong aircraft, misplaced, or the routing label may have been damaged. Regardless of the cause, losing your bag is never enjoyable.
Do you know what steps to take if your bag is lost? Read on to find out!
Baggage Delay
Baggage delay happens regularly.
There are several reasons why baggage delay occurs, with the most frequent being:
- Incorrect loading onto a different plane;
- Loss of the bag;
- Damage to the baggage routing label;
- Failure to load the bag onto the plane on time, often observed with connecting flights when airport staff are unable to transfer the bag to the next flight promptly.
These circumstances typically result in baggage delays, which are usually resolved within a few days. In the case of a baggage delay, it is important to note that there is no specific compensation designated for such situations.
However, you may be eligible for reimbursement of expenses incurred due to the delay.
Jet2 provides baggage compensation solely in cases where the baggage is genuinely lost (not found within 21 days) or severely damaged. More on this below.
What to Do If Your Luggage Is Lost or Delayed?
You realize that your bag is missing. What steps should you take?
It is essential to report the loss of your baggage right away.
Remain within the baggage hall (reclaim area) and locate the Baggage Service Office, typically situated in close proximity to the baggage carousels. There, you can formally report the loss of your bag. Present your boarding pass and the baggage sticker affixed to it, and provide your passport or ID as identification. Additionally, provide detailed information about your bag, including the make, model, and color, as you may be asked further questions by the staff. If you have a photo of your bag or suitcase, show it to the staff. But if not, the detailed description will do.
Subsequently, you will receive a written confirmation known as a Property Irregularity Report (PIR), which will include a personal reference number. Ensure that you keep this document safe.
In most instances, you can anticipate a waiting period of 12 to 24 hours until Jet2 contacts you to make arrangements for the delivery of your bag.
Tracking Your Lost Baggage
How to track delayed baggage? How to track lost baggage?
Upon receiving the Property Irregularity Report (PIR), you will be assigned a personal reference number. This reference number enables you to track the status of your delayed or lost baggage online (using World Tracer Tool). You will receive specific instructions on how to utilize this tracking system.
Once your bag is located, Jet2 will reach out to you to make arrangements for its delivery.
Jet2 Delayed Baggage Compensation
What are your rights if your baggage is delayed?
Could you be entitled to Jet2 delayed baggage compensation?
Baggage Delayed For a Few Days
Airlines strive to ensure timely delivery of passengers’ baggage, making every effort to accomplish this within 24 hours. It’s important to note that in most instances, bags are located and delivered within a period of 72 hours.
To conveniently track the status of your baggage online, you can utilize the World Tracer Tool by entering the provided PIR (Property Irregularity Report) number. This tool enables you to monitor the progress of your bag throughout the entire process.
Reimbursement of Expenses
In the case of a baggage delay, it is important to note that there is no specific compensation designated for such situations.
However, you may be eligible for reimbursement of expenses incurred due to the delay. This reimbursement is often called “delayed baggage compensation”.
You can get refunded for essential expenses like toiletries, underwear, and necessary clothes. However, you must keep the receipts for these purchases because they are needed to file a claim. Please note that only essential items qualify for reimbursement. You can’t get reimbursement for the purchase of luxury or non-essential items.
Remember to file the claim within 21 days of receiving the lost baggage.
Lost Baggage (You Can Get Compensation)
Jet2 has 21 days to locate and return your baggage.
If it’s not found within this timeframe, it officially is considered lost.
You may be entitled to lost baggage compensation of up to €1300.
You’ll need to provide a detailed list of the items that were in your bag and their estimated value to receive compensation. It’s advisable not to pack expensive items such as electronics, art, jewellery, or valuable antiques in your checked baggage because airlines are only liable to pay up to a certain limit defined by the Montreal Convention and Jet2 Conditions of Carriage. Lost baggage compensation must be transferred to your bank account instead of being given in Jet2 vouchers.
In addition to compensation, you can file a claim for additional expenses.
Do not forget that you have to provide receipts for all purchases.

Is Travel Insurance Necessary?
No, it isn’t necessary (but it can help).
Even without insurance, you will still receive Jet2 lost baggage compensation.
However, having insurance can be advantageous for other aspects of your trip, such as unforeseen circumstances like illness, injury, or unexpected changes in your itinerary. Travel insurance provides added peace of mind in such situations. Furthermore, travel insurance often comes at a relatively low cost. So, why not consider obtaining insurance?
Regarding delayed baggage claims, it is important to note that not all travel insurance policies cover baggage delays. Before purchasing travel insurance, it is advisable to understand the coverage provided by that specific policy.
How does it work? Why can you receive lost baggage compensation without having insurance? This is because the loss of your bag is not your fault but the responsibility of the airline. The Montreal Convention specifies that the airline is liable for the loss or damage of your bag. Therefore, in most cases, you will be reimbursed for essential purchases like underwear, essential clothing, and toiletries. If your baggage remains missing for more than 21 days, it is considered lost, and Jet2 is obliged to refund the value of your bag.
If you have travel insurance, you can make a claim through your insurer. Claiming compensation or reimbursement with the insurer usually is easier than doing it with the airline.
Travel Prepared
One of our top travel recommendations is to always be prepared for any unforeseen circumstances.
By being prepared, we mean having a backup plan in place. In case something goes wrong, you will be ready to handle it. If you have concerns about your baggage potentially getting lost, it’s wise to carry essential items in your carry-on bag. Include travel-sized toiletries, spare underwear, a change of clothes, as well as medications and valuable items. By keeping these necessities in your carry-on bag, even if your checked bag is delayed or misplaced, you will still have access to the essentials.
Additionally, don’t forget about your rights! If your bag is delayed, you may be entitled to Jet2 delayed baggage compensation (i.e., reimbursement for your expenses). If your bag is lost, you may be entitled to lost baggage compensation.
What is your experience with baggage delays on Jet2 flights? Has Jet2 ever lost your baggage? Have you ever applied for “Jet2 delayed baggage compensation” (reimbursement of expenses in case of baggage delay)?
Please note that the rules for compensation for delayed or lost baggage with Jet2 are the same as those for other airlines. This is due to the Montreal Convention, which applies to the carriage of baggage on most international flights operated by Jet2 and other airlines globally.
