Jet2 Flight Delay Compensation

Jet2 flight delay compensation.

How to claim for delayed flight? And how much can you get?

In the EU and UK (in certain situations) you can claim compensation for a delayed flight. It doesn’t matter what is your nationality, how much did your ticket cost, or whether or not you have travel insurance. Age also doesn’t matter. Thanks to UK/EU Regulation 261, all travellers in the EU and the UK are protected, including children and babies. How can you claim compensation for a delayed flight?

One of the options is to let professionals deal with this.

Or, you can pursue flight delay compensation on your own.

Jet2: A British Low-Cost Airline

Jet2 is a low-cost airline based in the United Kingdom that operates both scheduled and charter flights. It is one of the largest airlines in the UK (after easyJet and British Airways). The carrier has its headquarters located at Leeds Bradford Airport. Jet2 operates flights to 70 European destinations, primarily focusing on Spain, the Mediterranean Sea, France, Greece, Italy, and Turkey.

In 2007, Jet2holidays, a sister company, was launched, offering package holidays.

The Jet2 fleet comprises the following aircraft models: Airbus A321-200, Airbus A321neo, Boeing 737-300, Boeing 737-800, and Boeing 757-200.

1. Jet2 Flight Delay Compensation: EU / UK Regulations

Overall, the EU flight delay compensation rules are simple.

Compensation laws in the EU and the UK are almost the same. Everything you see in the EU Regulation (EC No 261/2004), you will see in UK Regulation 261. And these regulations state that if you reach your destination at least 3 hours later than scheduled, and the delay is due to the fault of the airline, you can get compensation from the airline.

If you’re flying to or from Europe, your flight is delayed for 3 or more hours, and the delay is due to the fault of Jet2, you are eligible to compensation of up to €600. If your flight is with a non-EU/UK airline such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad, Turkish Airlines, etc., it applies only to flights departing from the EU/UK.

Could you be entitled to Jet2 flight delay compensation?

Yes, if:

  • Your flight lands 3 hours later than scheduled;
  • The delay is due to the fault of Jet2;
  • The flight is to/from Europe.

Jet2 is a British low-cost airline. Even if Jet2 is not an airline based in the EU, you can still claim compensation if your flight is delayed due to the fault of the airline. Yes, even if your Jet2 flight departs from the UK or a country outside the EU. That’s because you are protected under the UK law — Regulation UK 261, to be specific. To put it simply, this regulation, just like EU Regulation (EC No 261/2004), is a set of rules on compensation and assistance to passengers in case of flight delay, cancellation or flight overbooking.

So, all the above mentioned rules apply to all Jet2 delays and cancellations.

By Europe and EU here on this page (and on this website in general) we mean all EU Member States, the United Kingdom (UK), Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Reunion, Mayotte, Saint Martin (French Antilles), the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands, Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland.

1.1 Extraordinary Circumstances

There are situations when you aren’t eligible for compensation.

Flights delayed due to “extraordinary circumstances” are not eligible to compensation.

Extraordinary circumstances are events that are outside of the airline’s control. These events are: bad weather, natural disasters, security issues, civil unrest and other situations beyond the control of airlines. If you flight is delayed because of extraordinary circumstances, you can’t get compensation from the airline.

One more thing to remember is that not always airlines are telling the real reason for delay. That’s why when in doubt, double check what you’re told.

When airlines pay compensation to affected passengers, they lose money. A lot of money. To avoid that, airlines often don’t tell the right reason for delay. Or they might tell the affected passengers that aircraft technical problems are considered extraordinary circumstances, too. But it’s not true. Aircraft technical problems are not extraordinary circumstances, unless it’s a hidden manufacturing defect. If your flight is delayed due to technical problems, you can get compensation, no matter what the airline is telling you.

1.2 Jet2 Strikes

What about strikes?

Some strikes aren’t considered extraordinary circumstances. If it’s a Jet2 staff strike, and that causes a delay, you might be entitled to Jet2 flight delay compensation. If it’s a strike unrelated to the airline, it’s considered an extraordinary circumstance.

1.3 How to Calculate the Delay Time?

What really matters is the time of arrival to your destination.

Flight delay time is calculated based on the actual time of arrival to your destination, specifically, when the doors of the airplane are opened. If the doors are opened 3 or more hours after the original arrival time, you can get compensation. Keep in mind that you can’t calculate the delay time based on the time of departure.

1.4 Right to Care

In Europe you also have a right to care.

If your flight has been delayed for 3 or more hours, you have a right to receive care from Jet2. “Right to care” means that you are entitled to certain services for free. European regulations apply to all Jet2 flights.

Jet2 must offer you free meals and drinks in a reasonable relation to the waiting time, two free phone calls, e-mails or faxes. If the flight is delayed overnight, you should be offered accommodation and transportation from and to the airport as well. In Europe all passengers are eligible for this type of care from the airline.

3.1 Jet2 Voucher Refund or Cash?

You might be offered a voucher or coupon instead of compensation.

Majority of airlines were offering coupons during the COVID crisis.

According to the European laws, all compensations and refunds for flight cancellation must be paid either in cash or by bank transfer. Not in coupons, vouchers, miles or discounts. If Jet2 offers you compensation in form of vouchers, you don’t have to accept it. Request money instead.

4. Jet2 and Regulation UK261

Jet2 is a British low-cost airline.

The EU Flight Compensation Regulation 261/2004 will work only when disrupted Jet2 flight departs from the EU. But you are still protected if your Jet2 flight departs from the UK or any other country.

It is because after Brexit a new law has been brought into force — the Regulation UK261. It is similar to the EU Regulation 261/2004. Thanks to this regulation, in certain situations you are entitled to care and compensation from the airline. Just like you would in the EU.

The only difference is that the compensation is in Pounds Sterling.
