Jet2 Flight Cancellation Compensation

Jet2 flight cancellation refund.

Jet2 flight cancellation compensation. What is the difference between compensation and refund? What applies to you? Can you get both? Flights are cancelled due to various reasons. The most important thing you need to know is, if your flight is cancelled due to the fault of the airline, you may be entitled to both – a full refund from Jet2 and compensation up to €600.

In case of Jet2, it applies to most flights to and from the EU, and the UK.

There are two ways you can claim flight cancellation compensation.

1. Jet2 Flight Cancellation Compensation: EU Regulations

What happens if your Jet2 flight is cancelled?

What are your rights in this situation? Will you be booked on a new flight? Will it be for free? Can you get a full refund instead of a replacement flight? What about cancellation compensation?

According to EU law, flight cancellation procedures are very specific.

If you are notified of the cancellation 7 – 14 days before the scheduled time of departure:

  • You choose a new flight offered by your airline, which departs not more than 2 hours before the original departure time and you reach your destination less than 4 hours after the original arrival time. In this situation you are not entitled to compensation.
  • In other situations you are entitled to compensation.

If you are notified of the cancellation less than 7 days before the scheduled time of departure:

  • You choose a new flight offered by your airline, which departs not more than 1 hour before the original departure time and you reach your destination less than 2 hours after the original arrival time. In this situation you are not entitled to compensation.
  • In other situations you are entitled to compensation.

Could you be entitled to Jet2 flight cancellation compensation?

Yes, but your flight meet the following requirements:

  • Cancellation must be Jet2’s fault;
  • It must be a last-minute flight cancellation (up to 2 weeks before departure);
  • Flight must depart from/arrive in Europe or the UK.

Jet2 is a British low-cost airline. Even though British airlines, such as British Airways, Jet2, easyJet, etc., are not considered EU airlines anymore (because of Brexit), you still can get compensation for disrupted flights in the UK. If your Jet2 flight departs from the UK or other countries outside the EU, you are protected under the new Regulation UK261. You can get compensation if your flight is delayed, cancelled or overbooked due to the fault of the airline. Same as you would in the EU. UK Regulation 261 is very similar to its European counterpart.

By Europe and EU here on this page (and on this website in general) we mean all EU Member States, the United Kingdom (UK), Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Reunion, Mayotte, Saint Martin (French Antilles), the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands, Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland.

1.1 Extraordinary Circumstances

Sometimes reasons for flight cancellations are out of the airline’s control.

Situations like these are known as extraordinary circumstances. In such cases, you aren’t entitled to flight cancellation compensation no matter how last-minute is the cancellation.

If your flight is cancelled due to bad weather, natural disaster, terrorism threat, security issues or national strike, you aren’t entitled to receive flight cancellation compensation from Jet2. These situations are out of airline’s control. At the same time you should keep in mind that if your flight is cancelled because of a strike, you need to find out what kind of a strike it was. Because in some situations, you can get compensation if it was a strike.

If it’s a Jet2 staff strike, and that causes cancellation, you might get compensation.

1.2 Double Check What You Are Told

And, yes, make sure to double check what you’re told.

Because not always airlines are telling you the truth.

To avoid paying compensations and losing a lot of money, airlines often refuse compensation claims by saying that the flight was cancelled due to “extraordinary circumstances”. Even if it wasn’t. Even if it was cancelled due to technical problems (which aren’t extraordinary circumstances). If you are claiming compensation on your own, be prepared for that. You will need to ask the airline for proof. Or, hand over your case to a flight compensation company. We can help you with this.

Just fill in our claim form, and experts will check it on your behalf.

1.3 Right to Care

Your Jet2 flight is cancelled last-minute.

Now you have to wait at the airport for a new flight.

In this case you have a right to receive care from the airline.

All passengers in the EU and the UK have a right to care from the airline. If you are stuck at the airport for more than 3 hours due to delay, cancellation or overbooking, ask for assistance. You are entitled to it.

Jet2 must offer you free meals and drinks in a reasonable relation to the waiting time, two free phone calls, e-mails or faxes. If your new flight is leaving only on the next day, a free hotel stay (including free transfer) must be offered.

It doesn’t affect your chances of getting compensation.

1.4 Jet2 Flight Cancellation Refund, Jet2 Refund Policy

And again, the rules are very specific.

In the EU and the UK, in case of a cancelled flight, you are entitled to a new flight or a full refund. According to the EU Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 and the Regulation UK261, if your flight is cancelled, Jet2 should book you on a new flight, or offer you a full refund. It applies to most Jet2 flight cancellations. These are the rules in the EU/UK. They are not affected by Jet2 internal policies (Jet2 refund policy).

The refund must be paid within 7 days. The money must be transferred to your bank account. No matter the reason for cancellation.

You don’t have to agree to a Jet2 voucher refund.

Here’s an excerpt from the Regulation (EC) No 261/2004:

Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, Article 5

Cancellation

In case of cancellation of a flight, the passengers concerned shall: (a) be offered assistance by the operating air carrier in accordance with Article 8.

Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, Article 8

Right to reimbursement or re-routing

Where reference is made to this Article, passengers shall be offered the choice between: (a) – reimbursement within seven days (b) re-routing, under comparable transport conditions, to their final destination at the earliest opportunity.

Regulation UK261 is very similar to the Regulation (EC) No 261/2004. Both regulations are intended to protect the passengers in the event of long delays, flight cancellations and denied boardings due to overbooking.

These regulations don’t cover cases when you yourself cancel a Jet2 flight.

One of them is more time consuming, the other – easier.

One of the options is to contact Jet2 directly. Visit the website of Jet2. Find the contact form. Request Jet2 flight cancellation compensation. Wait for the reply. Keep in mind that it could take a couple of months before the airline gets back to you. You might need to send more than one message, to remind them about your case.

When submitting a Jet2 flight compensation claim refer to either Regulation UK261 or Regulation (EC) No 261/2004. 3. How Much Can You Claim?

The compensation amount in the EU/UK go up to €600 per person.

Here is how you can calculate your Jet2 compensation:

When your destination is within the EU/UK:

€250

If the distance of your flight is
up to 1500 km

€400

If the distance of your flight is between 1500 – 3500 km

When your destination is outside the EU/UK:

€250

If the distance of your flight is
up to 1500 km

€400

If the distance of your flight is between 1500 – 3500 km

€600

If the distance of your flight is more than 3500 km

There’s one exception. When the flight distance is 3500+ kilometres and you reach your destination 3 to 4 hours later than planned, you are entitled only to 50% of the compensation amount (that means €300, not €600).

3.1 Jet2 Voucher Refund or Cash?

What if you are offered a Jet2 voucher instead of compensation?

You don’t have to accept a voucher refund. Airline compensation and refunds have to be paid in cash or by bank transfer. It applies to both EU and UK flights.

These are the rules in Europe.

4. What Happens If a Flight Is Cancelled?

What to do if your Jet2 flight is cancelled?

First of all, wait for the email from Jet2.

If you are already at the airport, wait an announcement from Jet2. Do not proceed through airport security. Your flight is cancelled, and there will be a new flight. You will need to check in for this flight, and it could be done at the public access area of the airport (before the security).

In most cases, you’ll be given a choice between a new flight and a full refund. If you choose a refund, take into account that it will take up to 7 days until you receive your money.

If your flight is cancelled less than 2 weeks before departure date, and it is due to the airline’s fault, you can get compensation, too. Don’t forget to claim that compensation (if you think it’s due).

Do you need to be on time for another flight? Your Jet2 flight is cancelled, but you have another flight to catch? If you miss it, it’s your responsibility. Because it’s a self-transfer, and the airline is not liable for missed connections. Jet2 doesn’t sell airline protected connecting flights. So, you will have to deal with the consequences yourself and book yourself on a new flight. Read more about Jet2 self transfers.
