Experiencing a delay in your Jet2 refund?
You’ve initiated a full refund request due to a cancellation and now you’re left waiting… Perhaps you’ve received a communication from Jet2 explaining the delay, or maybe you’re yet to hear from them. Regardless, one thing stands firm. In the EU and UK, the laws governing these transactions are quite clear. As per these laws, Jet2 should complete the refund process within 7 days.
What can you do if it’s taking longer than that?
Delayed Jet2 Refund: A Comprehensive Guide
Airline companies are obligated to provide a refund when they cancel a flight.
For instance, in Europe, if Jet2 cancels a flight, they must give you an option between a complete refund and a new flight. Understand that there are occasions when you can only get a refund, but sometimes — a Jet2 refund and flight cancellation compensation.
Step 1: Get in Touch with Jet2
Reach out to Jet2 customer support through their website.
Unless there’s an unforeseen large-scale event, like the start of a global pandemic, they should respond to you within a week. If you don’t receive a response, continue to send follow-up messages every few days until you get noticed.
Step 2: Reach Out to Jet2 via Social Media
If Jet2 remains unresponsive, leverage social media.
If even after a few weeks of emails and messages, you don’t hear back from them, use platforms like Facebook and Twitter to get their attention. Remind them about the 7 day limit. Refer to the Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, Article 5 and 8.
Step 3: Do Not Accept Vouchers
The Jet2 refund should be transferred directly to your bank account.
You are not obligated to accept Jet2 vouchers.
Step 4: Contact the National Enforcement Body (NEB)
Such an organization exists in every EU member state.
Reach out to the NEB of your flight’s origin country. For instance, if your flight is from Germany, get in touch with the Nationale Beschwerde- und Durchsetzungsstelle Fluggastrechte. For flights from non-EU countries, contact the NEB of the destination country within the EU. You can find the contact details of these organizations on this page.
Learn more about this here.
Although the fourth step promises the highest success rate, it requires a considerable time commitment. It usually takes around 2 months for the respective NEB to reach a decision. And then, you have to wait for Jet2 to process the payment. To expedite the process, continue to engage with Jet2 on their social media pages and other communication channels.
By Europe and EU here on this page (and on this website in general) we mean all EU Member States, the United Kingdom (UK), Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Reunion, Mayotte, Saint Martin (French Antilles), the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands, Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland.
Jet2 Refund: When Are You Entitled to One?
As per EU regulations, you are entitled to a complete refund if Jet2 cancels your flight.
In case of a flight cancellation, Jet2 has to give you an option between re-routing (free replacement flight) or a complete refund of your ticket cost. This holds irrespective of the cancellation cause, including so-called extraordinary circumstances. The Jet2 refund should be processed within seven days from the flight cancellation.
Any delay on the airline’s part in processing refunds is a breach of EU regulations, and passengers have the right to consider legal action.
What If You Are the One Cancelling the Flight?
When you are the one to cancel the flight, the refund policy becomes a little more complex. Here are some factors to consider:
- Flexible tickets. If you have a flexible ticket, you are likely entitled to a refund, but it is best to check the airline’s policies.
- Non-refundable tickets. Non-refundable tickets typically do not qualify for a full refund. However, the airline might agree to refund the taxes included in the ticket price.
- Travel insurance coverage. If you have travel insurance that includes cancellation protection, you may be eligible for a refund from your insurance provider, depending on the reason for cancellation.
- 24-hour cancellation policy. Some airlines offer a full refund if you cancel your flight within 24 hours of booking, as long as the booking was made at least 7 days prior to the scheduled departure.
- Unforeseen events. In the event of unforeseen events such as illness or a loss of a family member, the airline may provide a refund or credit for future travel. However, this is subject to the airline’s individual policy.
Flight Cancellation due to Extraordinary Circumstances: Can You Get a Refund?
In situations of extraordinary circumstances, such as strikes by airport personnel (excluding airline staff strikes), severe weather disturbances, or safety threats, airlines are generally not held accountable for the cancellation.
Nevertheless, as outlined by the EU regulations (Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 and Regulation UK 261), when an airline cancels a flight, they still have the obligation to give passengers the choice of a complete refund or the opportunity for re-routing (new flight). This implies that even if the cancellation is due to extraordinary circumstances, you still have a right to a refund.
Bear in mind, the refund should be processed within a one-week time frame. If you face any hindrance in receiving your refund, feel free to implement the detailed plan as described above.
