Jet2 Damaged Baggage Compensation

Jet2 damaged baggage compensation.

Are you entitled to it? What are the rules? How much is it?

From time to time, baggage may suffer damage while in transit. It’s important to know what qualifies as damaged baggage. Is minor damage, like scratches, included? Jet2 is responsible only for major damage, such as broken handles, wheels, cracks, or holes. The airline won’t cover minor scrapes and dents or other signs of normal wear and tear on your baggage.

What to do if your luggage is damaged?

What to Do If Your Luggage Is Damaged?

If your bag arrives damaged, you may be wondering what steps to take next.

First, assess the damage to determine if it’s minor or serious. Airlines are typically not responsible for minor damage such as scratches or small dents. However, if there is a broken wheel, handle, crack, or hole, you should report it.

To report the damage, head to the Baggage Service Office in the baggage reclaim area near the baggage carousels. Bring your damaged bag, along with your passport and boarding pass, to file a report. If the bag can be repaired, the airline will fix it free of charge. Otherwise, they will replace it.

After filling the report, you will be provided with a written confirmation known as the Property Irregularity Report (PIR). After receiving your PIR, you will need to make a claim with the airline (via e-mail or post).

To make a claim, you must provide a copy of your PIR, photographic evidence of any damaged items, and receipts for any items you plan to claim for. The staff of the Baggage Service Office will explain the procedure to you.

Baggage claims must be sent to the airline within seven days of receiving your PIR.

Jet2 Damaged Baggage Compensation

What are your entitlements if your baggage is damaged?

Are you eligible for Jet2 damaged baggage compensation?

Damaged Baggage Compensation

Airlines are responsible for damage to your checked baggage.

In the event that your checked baggage is damaged, you have the right to receive compensation.

Jet2 bears responsibility for any significant damage to your checked baggage. According to the guidelines outlined in the Montreal Convention regarding damaged baggage, you may be eligible for compensation of up to €1300.

The compensation amount is determined based on the value of your luggage. Therefore, when reporting the damage, it is essential to indicate the value of your baggage. The compensation provided by Jet2 for damaged baggage should cover the expenses incurred in purchasing a replacement bag of equivalent value. It’s a monetary compensation – you don’t have to accept any Jet2 vouchers.

Please note that it is not recommended to include electronics, art, jewellery, or other valuable items in your checked baggage, as Jet2 (or any other airline) is not liable to provide compensation for their full value. Compensation is limited to the extent defined by the Montreal Convention and Jet2 Conditions of Carriage.

If the damage is attributed to a defect in the bag itself, you are not eligible for compensation. Additionally, minor damages such as small dents or scratches are not considered eligible for compensation as they can be considered signs of normal use. Regrettably, wear and tear during air travel is an inevitable reality that cannot be entirely avoided.

Reimbursement of Expenses: Delayed and Lost Baggage

In the event of a delayed or lost baggage, you may be eligible for reimbursement of expenses.

However, it’s important to note that if your bag is damaged, you are not entitled to reimbursement for expenses. As your bag arrived on time, there is no missing or delayed item.

If your bag is delayed or lost, and you need to replace essential items, you have the right to claim reimbursement for additional costs, also known as delayed baggage compensation. In such cases, you can purchase necessary items you cannot travel without and submit the receipts to make a claim. The airline will then reimburse you for these expenses. You have a 21-day window from the day you retrieve your lost baggage to file a claim for reimbursement.

Please keep in mind that this reimbursement policy applies specifically to situations involving lost or delayed baggage. Unfortunately, you cannot file a claim for reimbursement for a damaged suitcase.

Is Travel Insurance Necessary?

Yes and no.

Traveling without insurance is possible, and insurance papers are not required for claiming Jet2 damaged baggage compensation.

Under the Montreal Convention, an international treaty, airlines are responsible for the timely and undamaged delivery of hold baggage. This protection applies to most global airlines and flights, ensuring compensation for lost, delayed, or damaged luggage without the need for travel insurance.

However, having comprehensive travel insurance is beneficial.

Travel insurance provides coverage in various situations, depending on the policy. It can expedite the process of obtaining damaged baggage compensation. After reporting bag damage, contact your travel insurance provider for assistance, as they may reimburse the value of your bag.

It’s important to note that not all insurance policies cover luggage damage. Prior to purchasing insurance, it is essential to understand the coverage provided by your policy.

Travel Prepared

Always be prepared and have a backup plan.

A reliable plan B is to pack essential items in your carry-on luggage.

Baggage damage or loss can occur unexpectedly. By having your essentials in your carry-on, you are prepared for such situations. Include a change of clothes, travel-sized toiletries, underwear, and an extra pair of shoes in your carry-on. Additionally, keep valuable items, money, medications, and important documents in your cabin bag. It’s crucial not to place these items in your checked luggage. If your bag sustains severe damage, such as large holes or cracks, the contents may be affected or items could even be lost.

What else? Consider carrying a packable duffle bag or ultralight packable backpack in your hand luggage. If your checked bag is significantly damaged, you can transfer your belongings to this extra bag. Moreover, if you run out of luggage space at the end of your trip, this packable bag can be useful.

What is your experience with baggage damage and Jet2? Have you ever received damaged baggage compensation from Jet2 or other airline?

Please note that the rules for compensation for delayed or lost baggage with Jet2 are the same as those for other airlines. This is due to the Montreal Convention, which applies to the carriage of baggage on most international flights operated by Jet2 and other airlines globally.
